Sassafras Story
The Logo of AMERICAN INTERFAITH CAMPS is a stylization of sassafras leaves.

God gives humanity wonderful lessons of truth within nature. One of these lessons is to be found in the Sassafras tree.

The Sassafras tree grows on the edge of the forest and can soar to a height of seventy feet. It is peculiar though that while it is immature it produces not one but three distinct varieties of leaves.

The first is elliptical in shape, the second two lobed and the third three lobed. Yet as the Sassafras reaches skyward to its maturity these leaves blend into one.

Is not this tree a lesson to us who call ourselves Jews, Christians or Muslims? Are we not nurtured by the single root of our being that we call God? Do we not cling to the one trunk which we call Earth? Do we not strive toward the one sky which we call Heaven?

At the end of life’s journey, just as the Sassafras leaves unite as one, God will not welcome us in our diversity of faiths but as people of Faith.

This is the lesson that American Interfaith Camps teaches: That there is one God and one Earth and that Jew, Christian and Muslim should live in peace that we might bring peace to all.
